Tempering (giving the correct hardness and elasticity to the metal by heating and cooling) is often used for springs. When a piece of wire or sheet is bent, the elasticity limits are exceeded and the plastic deformations take place. In order to reduce the stresses resulting from the plastic deformations, the springs are tempered.
